North Manchester FM: Hannah’s Bookshelf, Saturday 4 November, 2-4pm

Join me on Saturday at 2pm on North Manchester FM for this week’s Hannah’s Bookshelf. I’ll be welcoming back the lovely Paul Morris, and also talking to Emily Graham and Macey Wareing, two of the winners of the Portico Library’s Sadie Massey Awards.

The Portico Sadie Massey Awards organise reading and writing competitions for young people aged 8 – 18. Students can either enter a review on a book of their choice or a piece of creative writing set in the North of England. The competition is organised by The Portico Library, an amazing historic library in Manchester City Centre. This year’s winners not only received book tokens and author visits to their schools, but they also had their entry published in a book called Time Travellers and the Crystal Dome: Stories from The Portico Library. This book is published by Stockport’s Seven Arches Publishing and has four fantastic stories about time travelling kids who go back to the past to encounter famous historical figures.

Paul is the author of the children’s book, Time Traveller Danny and the Codebreaker, a time travel adventure that takes Danny Higgins into the secret world of Bletchley Park during World War II, where he meets Alan Turing. The book is part of the Time Traveller series published Seven Arches. Paul is one of the authors of Time Travellers and the Crystal Dome.

Emily is 18 years old and has just left Bolton School for Girls. In her last year she composed a special homage to her home town Bolton, which won her the top writing prize in the awards this year. Macey Wareing attends Oak Tree Primary school and she is 9 years old. She wrote a fantastic review of Chris Riddell’s Ottoline and the Yellow Cat that caught the attention of the judges.

We’ll be talking about the Portico Library, the Sadie Massey Awards, and hearing about the girls’ fantastic winning submissions. We may even have a few new Apocalypse Books selections to talk about…

Tune in on Saturday at 2pm on 106.6FM (if you’re in the North Manchester area) or listen online (if you’re further afield).
